Aadhaar is now required for opening new account on Facebook. The social profile of users to be verified for fake identity. Facebook has made currently optional to their users to provide name as per Aadhaar card while creating new Facebook account on mobile site.
Facebook is having second largest user base in India after United states with 241 million users. Indian government has made the Aadhaar compulsory for almost every transaction and services like Opening Bank account, Filling Income Tax returns, Property details, Getting subsidy, Linking PAN etc. This is the further addition to link the social profile on Facebook.
Facebook is testing a new feature which encourages those opening new accounts to submit their names as in their Aadhaar cards. “Using the name on your Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognise you,” says the prompt when one submits the name for a new account on Facebook mobile page.
Currently this features is available only to small group of users for testing purposes. Facebook has initiated this mandate to curb the fake accounts on their platform. According to Facebook, this is an optional prompt and users are not required to enter the name on their Aadhaar card.
Other than Facebook, other private players who has made Aadhaar services mandatory are Amazon & Zoomcar. Online retailer Amazon had asked customers to upload their Aadhaar numbers to track lost packages. Car rental platform Zoomcar not accepting the bookings without Aadhaar as proof of identity.
