First time in India a sitting judge sent to jail for contempt of court. Supreme Court created history by holding sitting trouble maker Calcutta HC judge C S Karnan guilty of contempt of court and punishing him with six month jail. Justice karnan had earlier passed a judgement siting jail term of Chief justice of India (CJI) along with other nine senior judges of supreme court for 5 years along with penalty of Rs one lacs each. Justice Karnan, who was to retire on June 11, will spend the last month of his tenure as judge and five months thereafter in jail.
A seven-judge bench headed by CJI JS Khehar has declared Justice Karnan guilty of contempt of Supreme court , Indian judiciary and constitutional judicial process. The Supreme Court ordered West Bengal police and DGP to take into custody the disgraced judge.

Justice karnan earlier tired in playing his dalit background to berate and pass unconscionable orders. He was transferred from Madras high court to Calcutta HC. Additional solicitor general Maninder Singh agreed with the apex court that Justice Karnan has committed gross contempt of court and needed to be punished exemplary.
