Reliance Jio Launches JioGigaFibre – Reliance Jio has announced the launch of FTTH home broadband solution Jio Fiber or brand name Jio GigaFiber. Chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani has announced the launch of JioGigaFibre at companys’ AGM (Annual General Meeting) in Mumbai. He further announced that Reliance Jio’s Gigafibre broadband services would be made available in 1,100 cities in the country after 15th August.
Jio GigaFiber consists of the GigaFiber router along with the Jio GigaTV set-top box. The set-top box will allow users to make video calls to other GigaTV devices or mobile connections on any network in India.
This is another trouble for AirTel as JioGigaFibre can immediately disrupt home broadband pricing, forcing rivals to slash rates. Jio has already invested over 250,000 crores for creating state-of-the-art mobile and broadband connectivity
What is FTTH?
FTTH is defined as Fibre to the Home (FTTH) services. FTTH are installing the fiber cable right up to the individual building. At present, the fiber cable reaches only till the main premises while the last connections to individual homes/offices are through traditional copper cable.
Why is FTTH faster?
The cable used for connections to individual units is not made of fibre. The traditional cable is not as efficient as the fiber cable. Traditional cables are solower due to patches etc. A fiber cable till the individual unit dramatically increases speed and quality and improves the experience of surfing, gaming and streaming, etc.
FTTH could be 100 times faster than the traditional modem connections but costlier than the traditional cable.
Jio GigaFiber
Jio is claiming the speed of 100 Mbps and upto 1Gbps. Reliance Jio is promoting it as “biggest greenfield fixed line broadband service” in the world. Under Jio Giga Fiber, services such as Ultra HD entertainment on TV, multi-party video conferencing, voice-activated virtual assistant, virtual reality gaming and shopping, and smart home solutions will be provided to subscribers Users will also be able to connect VR headsets to their Jio GigaFiber network and view 360-degree content in 4K resolution.
